Dynamic changes in ocular shape during human development and its implications for retina fovea formation.Ashley M. Rasys, Andrew Wegerski, Paul A. Trainor, Robert B. Hufnagel, Douglas B. Menke & James D. Lauderdale - 2024 - Bioessays 46 (1):2300054.
The human fovea is known for its distinctive pit‐like appearance, which results from the displacement of retinal layers superficial to the photoreceptors cells. The photoreceptors are found at high density within the foveal region but not the surrounding retina. Efforts to elucidate the mechanisms responsible for these unique features have ruled out cell death as an explanation for pit formation and changes in cell proliferation as the cause of increased photoreceptor density. These findings have led to speculation that mechanical forces (...)

The development of the counterfactual imagination.Jennifer Van Reet, Ashley M. Pinkham & Angeline S. Lillard - 2007 - Behavioral and Brain Sciences 30 (5-6):468-468.
How the rational imagination develops remains an open question. The ability to imagine emerges early in childhood, well before the ability to reason counterfactually, and this suggests that imaginative thought may facilitate later counterfactual ability. In addition, developmental data indicate that inhibitory control may also play a role in the ability to reason counterfactually.

Exploring perception and usage of narrative medicine by physician specialty: a qualitative analysis.Joshua M. Hauser & Daniel A. Fox - 2021 - Philosophy, Ethics, and Humanities in Medicine 16 (1):1-9.
BackgroundNarrative medicine is a well-recognized and respected approach to care. It is now found in medical school curricula and widely implemented in practice. However, there has been no analysis of the perception and usage of narrative medicine across different medical specialties and whether there may be unique recommendations for implementation based upon specialty. The aims of this study were to explore these gaps in research.MethodsFifteen senior physicians who specialize in internal medicine, pediatrics, or surgery (5 physicians from each specialty) were (...)

A covenant with the status quo? Male circumcision and the new BMA guidance to doctors.M. Fox - 2005 - Journal of Medical Ethics 31 (8):463-469.
This article offers a critique of the recently revised BMA guidance on routine neonatal male circumcision and seeks to challenge the assumptions underpinning the guidance which construe this procedure as a matter of parental choice. Our aim is to problematise continued professional willingness to tolerate the non-therapeutic, non-consensual excision of healthy tissue, arguing that in this context both professional guidance and law are uncharacteristically tolerant of risks inflicted on young children, given the absence of clear medical benefits. By interrogating historical (...)

    On Making and Keeping Promises.Richard M. Fox & Joseph P. Demarco - 1996 - Journal of Applied Philosophy 13 (2):199-208.
Do the conditions under which promises are made determine whether they ought to be kept? Philosophers have placed a number of conditions on promising which, they hold, must be met in order to make promise‐keeping obligatory. In so doing, they have distinguished valid promises from invalid promises and justified promises from promises that are not justified. Considering such conditions, one by one, we argue that they are mistaken. In the first place, the conditions they lay down are not necessary for (...)

    Modern French Philosophy.L. Scott-Fox & J. M. Harding (eds.) - 1980 - Cambridge University Press.
This is a critical introduction to modern French philosophy, commissioned from one of the liveliest contemporary practitioners and intended for an English-speaking readership. The dominant 'Anglo-Saxon' reaction to philosophical development in France has for some decades been one of suspicion, occasionally tempered by curiosity but more often hardening into dismissive rejection. But there are signs now of a more sympathetic interest and an increasing readiness to admit and explore shared concerns, even if these are still expressed in a very different (...)

The Way Toward Wisdom: An Interdisciplinary and Intercultural Introduction to Metaphysics.Benedict M. Ashley - 2009 - University of Notre Dame Press.
Working from a realist Thomistic epistemology, Ashley asserts that we must begin our search for wisdom in the natural sciences; only then, he believes, can we ensure that our claims about immaterial and invisible things are rooted in reliable experience of the material. Any attempt to share wisdom, he insists, must derive from a context that is both interdisciplinary and intercultural. Ashley offers an ambitious analysis and synthesis of major historical contributions to the unification of knowledge, including non-Western (...)

The Roles of Cynicism, CFO Pressure, and Moral Disengagement on FIN 48 Earnings Management.Ashley Nicole West & Gary M. Fleischman - 2022 - Journal of Business Ethics 185 (3):545-562.
Archival research reports that managers often use the FIN 48 uncertain tax liability accrual to manage earnings. To assess solutions to this problem, we deconstruct the ethical and psychological reasoning that leads to FIN 48 opportunistic behavior. Hence, we employ a survey of seasoned accounting managers to assess the influences of cynicism, two measures of moral disengagement, and pressure from a CFO on the propensity to engage in FIN 48 earnings management. Specifically, we manipulate the influence of the study scenario (...)

    Executive compensation and earnings persistence.Allan S. Ashley & Simon S. M. Yang - 2004 - Journal of Business Ethics 50 (4):369-382.
Governing boards utilize executive compensation contracts in an attempt to align executive actions with corporate goals. The objective is to ensure that executive performance provides value to the organization in terms of successful outcomes. A key performance criteria typically specified in CEO compensation contracts is earnings targets. However, using earnings as a performance evaluation may be problematic because some firms exhibit robust and sustained earnings over time (high earnings persistence), and other firms, such as high growth oriented firms, exhibit weak (...)

Characteristics of men, manners, opinions, times.Anthony Ashley Cooper Shaftesbury, Stanley Grean & J. M. Robertson (eds.) - 1711 - Indianapolis,: Bobbs-Merrill.
Shaftesbury's Characteristics of Men, Manners, Opinions, Times was published in 1711. It ranges widely over ethics, aesthetics, religion, the arts (painting, literature, architecture, gardening), and ancient and modern history, and aims at nothing less than a new ideal of the gentleman. Together with Locke's Essay Concerning Human Understanding and Addison and Steele's Spectator, it is a text of fundamental importance for understanding the thought and culture of Enlightenment Europe. This volume presents a new edition of the text together with an (...)

The dialogue between tradition and history: essays on the foundations of Catholic moral theology.Benedict M. Ashley - 2022 - Broomall, PA: The National Catholic Bioethics Center. Edited by Matthew R. McWhorter, Cajetan Cuddy, Matthew K. Minerd & Nicanor Pier Giorgio Austriaco.
The decades following the Second Vatican Council witnessed Catholic theology's break from classicism. Deductive, classical theology was replaced by an empirical, historically minded theology. The result was moral confusion and intellectual controversy whose effects are still felt by the Church. Benedict Ashely agreed that some revision in moral theology was necessary after Vatican II to formulate and integrate the mysteries of the Catholic faith. The question was how such teachings could be reformulated while preserving their substantive content. Ashley presents (...)

“This is an impressive, well-researched book, of great value. It offers the wider philosophical community a point of entrance, by a proponent of a certain type of Thomism, into a domain that all philosophers think they already understand. The result is the creation of a ‘big picture’ of human knowledge.” —Mark Johnson, Marquette University Working from a realist Thomistic epistemology, noted scholar Benedict Ashley, O.P., asserts that we must begin our search for wisdom in the natural sciences; only then, (...)

    Autobiography & Postmodernism.Kathleen M. Ashley, Leigh Gilmore & Gerald Peters - 1994
Exploring the connections between autobiography and postmodernism, this book addresses self-representation in a variety of literatures - Native American, British, Chicana, immigrant, and lesbian, among others - in genres as diverse as poetry, naming, confession, photography, and the manifesto. The essays examine how different writers respond to the culturally specific pressures of genre, how these constraints are negotiated, and what self-representation reveals about the politics of identity.
